The Office of Information Technology provides this definition document as a
resource to assist students, faculty, staff, and community in understanding the
terms used in policy and procedure documents.
Web Presence - electronic documents including but not limited to html
documents, xml documents, images, PDF files, audio media, video media,
scripts, and style sheets available to be accessed individually or in
combination using a browser.
Content Management Suite (CMS) - A number of
software applications used to create and manage Web-based
materials, such as HTML pages, images, PDF files, and the like.
Site Studio -A Web-based component of
CMS that allows multiple users to
create and update content files, route them through various stages of
development, and ultimately publish them for others to view. It is the
primary application that most developers/contributors/content
managers will
use.
Content Contributor - This is a non-technical
CMS role that allows users to
enter or update content, usually in response to a workflow task. These users are
typically content experts who will contribute information to the Web pages
created and managed through Site Studio.
Content Manager - This is a non-technical
CMS role that allows users to
enter or update content, to assign content creation or update tasks, and in some
cases to approve content. Users with this role will be responsible primarily for
initiating and monitoring workflows and determining the content that can be used
by other sites.
Site Manager - This is a non-technical
CMS role that is responsible for the
general administration of the content, users, and meta-data associated with a
given site. Using Site Studio, Site Managers can create additional subsites,
import files and templates to be used as shared resources, set up layouts
defining how the site uses organizational templates, and manage users.
Template Developer - This is a technical CMS role responsible for creating
the content templates that are imported into Site Studio to control the
appearance of the site pages and the content that users can add to them.
Template Developers do most of their work outside of Site Studio in applications
that allow them to create .jsp files that are used to impose structure and
content restrictions for Web pages in the site. In Site Studio,
Template Developers have all the rights of Content Contributors, Content
Managers, and Site Managers, but will use the application primarily to load and
test templates and to set up supporting elements like the thumbnails images that
users see for each template in various pick lists.
System Administrator - This is a technical
CMS role responsible for
administration of the
entire CMS environment and the ancillary system components upon which it
depends. Within Site Studio, System Administrators will typically be responsible
for
workflow template loading and management, for importing or creating the accounts
for the users that Site Managers work with, for monitoring the system, for
scheduling
publishing and configuration jobs, and for larger issues of consistency and
presentation
for the entire root site.
