Getting Started with Web Sites

So, you want a UCO web site.  And, you don't know where to start?  START HERE!

Starting out, you may need to know some basic information.  What is a web site?  What does it do for you?  How is a site put together? How many people does it take to create a site?  What do you use to create a web site?  Have you been to training?   What do you need before creating a site?

Knowing what is available at UCO helps you create a dynamic site.  Where can you find the UCO Web Guidelines?  What kind of server does UCO have?  How do you get an account on the UCO server?  What steps do you need to do?  What steps are done by someone else?  How do you get an address (URL)?  What information is required to be on a UCO page?

Planning a site is a critical step.  What preliminary planning should be done before creating a site? What things can be included in a web site?  What is a site's content?  What about multimedia such as video streaming or podcasting? What style elements should be considered?  What items are the core of a site plan?  What is a navigation structure?  What is a color palette?  What is an element structure?  What is a directory/subdirectory plan?

Developing a site is the "fun" part where all the creativity and planning come together to make magic happen.  Is there a suggested structure for a web site?  What should you consider when you are developing a single page?  How long should a page be?  What is meant by browser compatibility?  What impact does monitor settings have on a page?  What is meant by storage size?  What about text appearance?  What about graphics?  What are hyperlinks?

Publishing a site is the means to make it available for all web users.  How do you get a site on the World Wide Web?  How do you publish to the UCO server?  How do you use FrontPage to publish?  How can you tell if your publish worked successfully?  Where can you get help if the publish is not successful or  if something doesn't work?  What if you need to change something after reviewing the site in a browser?  What do you do if your page takes a long time to come up?  What comes after publishing a site?

After completing these five sections you are ready to develop additional elements.  Do you have all the required elements?  Do you need some basic elements? Do you want to try some intermediate elements?  Are you brave enough for the advanced elements? Have you given your site a quality review?
